How to Audit Your Streaming Subscriptions in 15 Minutes

Most of us sign up for streaming services on impulse — a free trial here, a must-watch show there — and then forget all about them. Before long, you are paying for five or six platforms and actually watching maybe two. The good news? You can take back control in about fifteen minutes. Here is exactly how.

Step 1: Gather your statements

Open your banking app and search for the last three months of transactions. Streaming charges are easy to miss because they are small and recurring. Look for names like Netflix, Disney, Spotify, Amazon Prime, Apple, and any app-store charges routed through Apple or Google. Write down every single one, along with the amount and the billing date.

Step 2: Rate how often you actually use each one

Be brutally honest here. For each service, ask yourself: do I use this daily, weekly, monthly, rarely, or never? A subscription you open every evening is money well spent. One you last touched three months ago is pure waste. This single question is the heart of a good audit — it turns a vague feeling of "I probably spend too much" into concrete, actionable numbers.

Step 3: Do the maths on the wasted portion

A £10 service you never watch is £120 a year gone. Two or three of those add up fast. Multiply each monthly cost by twelve to see the annual figure, then flag anything you rated "rarely" or "never". These are your prime cancellation candidates.

Step 4: Decide — cut, keep, or pause

  • Cut anything you have not used in over a month. You can always resubscribe later; there are no loyalty penalties.
  • Keep the one or two services that genuinely earn their place in your routine.
  • Pause services you use seasonally — a sports package in the off-season, for example.

Step 5: Set a reminder to repeat this

The single biggest reason people overspend on streaming is that they never review. Put a recurring reminder in your calendar every three months to run through this same checklist. Fifteen minutes, four times a year, can easily save you a few hundred pounds annually.

Auditing your subscriptions is not about depriving yourself of entertainment — it is about making sure every pound you spend is actually buying you something you enjoy. Once you see the numbers laid out, the decisions tend to make themselves.
